Locked Down

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

This poem was written by Dania Akil of Seneca Valley High School

Locked inside with no way out

Smiles now exchanged with worried doubt

Saying goodbye to those who care

As we long to breath the now poisoned air

No one had the chance to say “see you soon!”

So now we sit back and talk to the lonely, far moon

Trapped in the house, but locked in reality

People start to change, showing unrecognizable personalities

Fighting with those who are dear to our heart

Fighting the feeling that you and your family must part

Realizing the simple things you did not appreciate

Like when you wanted to see your friends, you never had to wait

Now here we are, stuck at home with no way out

The empty feeling of nothingness making us want to shout

We look for an end, but see no finish line in sight

We realize that those who tried to warn us were right

Quickly, we replace human touch with a taunting screen

With no sign of life, joy or peace to be seen

Connection now has the meaning of bars on the phone

Why did we only notice those around us when we suddenly became all alone?

The early Monday mornings and school days we once mourned

Are now greatly missed and sealed with an “I’m bored!”

For now we stare out the window and cry for the loss of our time

The stolen moments that have been taken; such a violation and crime

Stuck in the unknown with a question as the future, we don’t know where the world is bound

But as the sun touches the sky and the moon greets the night, peace will be found
