How the Rise of Artificial Intelligence is Surging the Demand for Jobs in Humanities

This article was written by Shirin Jamali of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School

The term “humanities” refers to the study of a range of aspects of human society, including the application of these studies to the human environment with respect to the current conditions of national life. Currently, there is an academic job market collapse in the humanities, which can be attributed to a transformation that has been occurring for numerous decades.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) development is dependent on science and engineering, but a core understanding of communications and social sciences is crucial to ensure that the AI is inculcated with a guise of personality. As AI soars in supposed intelligence, great responsibility for the development of the moral and ethical goodness of these machines is instituted. In order for this to be accomplished, there must be an influx of individuals with degrees in the humanities.

“AI will not take over the job market for those in the humanities. Rather, it will complement humanities jobs by helping detect processes that the human brain cannot comprehend, and will essentially help broaden the opportunities for humanities majors,” says Belen Pacheco, a student at Walter Johnson High School.

An expanded perspective is brought by a student at Bethesda-Chevy Chase high school, who feels that “machines are only able to take over STEM work, so people will adapt to doing more humanities jobs that will solve greater human issues such as critical race theory.”

With acknowledgement to the influence that AI will have on the world, it is pivotal to gain mastery on the intricate issues encompassing the integration of these devices within society.
